Because they must often work closely with architects, contractors and other service providers, interior designers need to be good team leaders and good team players.

They must be willing to work cooperatively with others and make compromises and negotiate when necessary to solve problems. Interior designers should also possess excellent time and project management skills since they frequently work on more than one project at a time under strict deadlines. They are also often working for themselves so they must learn to set and manage their own deadlines to get projects done in a timely fashion. Interior designers have to understand how to plan a business, and they need to know how to sell their ideas to clients, construct informative and persuasive proposals and presentations, and maintain good relationships with clients to promote referrals and repeat business.

Interior designers often work in large or small corporations or design firms. After several years of experience, many interior designers prefer to begin to work for themselves by opening up their own business. In this case they often meet with clients and then work on an individual contract basis. This is why it is important that they have a positive and professional relationship with clients because much of their income is earned through freelance work and referrals. A job as an interior designer can have many positive aspects. With hard work and determination, an interior designer can have a long-lasting, rewarding, and very fulfilling career.
