Many companies would prefer not to hire a person if the results indicate certain criminal record in his past. This is usually done discreetly so as not to offend the other person.

Most of the time, this is done by checking on the character reference or the past employers’ of the candidate. With a background check that involves this one, you actually do not need to hire someone to do it for you. You can simply call the company he or she has worked with before and ask them questions you need to ask.

It can also be done by companies as well to see if the candidate has good performance in his previous employments. Aside from that, they can also do it as a way to have a rough estimate on how much salary they want to offer for the potential employee, especially when the candidate is applying for a higher ranking position. If you have a candidate that you think really qualifies for the position he is applying for, and you do not want to lose him with the kind of pay grade you offer, then you should make use of this kind of checks to make sure that what you offer him is what he really deserves.

A background check can be done not only for potential employees. You can also do it for people whom you think have shady characters. There is a lot of information you can gather from it. Therefore, you should be prepared on the kind of data you receive, since it may not be what you have expected.
