Do I Need an Account to Ship with a Courier?

Many people feel that in order to get a Houston courier service to carry their goods for them that they are going to need to open an account with them first. This isn’t always the case. There are certain situations where a courier company may be willing to make a delivery for a client without that client having to first open an account with that courier. This is usually only available in certain situations however, and the service which is available is not going to be exactly the same as that which is presented to those that have actually opened an account with that courier company.

Most courier companies will allow you to ship without an account, but they are going to require that you pay up front for your shipping. This is one of the great things about having an account with a courier company. Typically, in that situation you are simply going to have to request the service, and then get billed for it at a later date. This is convenient, especially for those that need to ship regularly as part of the operations of their business. When you don’t have an account, you’re going to have to settle up before you shipment goes out the door.

The next thing that you’ll notice if you’re shipping without an account is that you’re not going to have access to a lot of services that those with an account will. One of the areas that this can be the most problematic is with the tracking service that they provide you. Typically speaking, most courier companies now offer real time GPS tracking including real time PODs on all their shipments. However, these services are often only offered to those that are account holders with the courier company.

Another thing that can happen is you may find that your shipments are actually more expensive if you’re shipping without an account. Many courier companies have a preferred rate that they offer to their account holding customers. This might not be a deal breaker if you only ship once in a while, but for regular shippers, this is just one more reason to seriously consider opening a courier account.

There is one good aspect to not having an account though. You can use that time to really evaluate companies by shipping on a one time basis with them to really assess the quality of the service that they are able to offer you.
