So You’d Like to Become a Chef

Many who want to become a chef know about it before they’re ten years old. Although I never actually went to culinary school, I could compete with the best of them as for taste. I am excellent with seasonings; but have also done much research as to the nutritional aspects of foods as well as the antioxidant nature of fruits and vegetables.

Part of the thing which can fuel the chef is his desire to please others. Generally, people learn that others like to eat. If you can make something that makes a person gobble it down, there’s a certain power in that. You’re pleasing them. If they, then, ask for more of what you did; that’s awesome. Someone wants something that you created. That makes you feel good when you’re wanted.

Culinary arts is when you take that desire and you magnify it a thousand times. In that echelon, the critics are going to be far more discerning; and the level of snobbery can be revolting. I’d say that there’s some place down in the middle of that spectrum which can be the most satisfying.

There was an awesome Greek restaurant in Tucson which was called “Gyros”. They were always scrumptious, but just twice I would call the food ‘heavenly’. We’d go back just with the hope that we could recreate that experience again. It’s that elusive nature of perfection that keeps a culinary artist moving; constantly trying to create that one utopian food experience that will send us to Heaven.

It’s not surprising that there’s a fruit desert called ‘Ambrosia’ and many movies which are all related to food. Chocolate stimulates similar receptors in the brain that good sex does. In fact, just what meal that you have with a date can have everything to do with the success or failure of the date. If you eat too much, that’s not conducive to having good sex. If she smells like fish, then that could definitely be a turn-off. To drink some wine might help, but to have too much is to vomit. That’s not very sexy, that’s for sure.

It’s not too hard to become a chef, but it’s very difficult to become a sensitive one. I can’t tell you how many places that I’ve eaten in and thought, “I could have made it taste better than that!” I always like the restaurants where I couldn’t have done that in a million years.

Before you become a chef, you should work at a restaurant in any regard. Bus tables, or act as a gopher. They oftentimes have someone who prepares smaller dishes such as the one who peels the potatoes in the auto-peeling machine, prepares the salad, makes coleslaw, puts milk into the milk machines, cracks eggs and de-bones turkeys. I did that job for a major nursing home in New Hampshire, and it was fun.

If you work at a restaurant, you’ll see in a direct way if you want to become a chef, or not. In my particular case, it seemed that every chef was also an alcoholic. I think that the fast-paced nature of the job gets to you after a while. Also, the long hours don’t make it very amenable to staying married. In all three cases, they seemed to be depressed. That doesn’t mean it would also happen to you; but you should check things like that out by asking different chefs how they like their job. If I had only seen those three cases of being a chef, I would have certainly chosen a different profession (which I did).
