Top Five Joomla Tricks

When using Joomla to help build your website, it can get a little tricky. Joomla is very different from other website builders so it can help if you have a few tips and tricks underneath your belt. Here are the top five Joomla tricks.

* Be Consistent with Your Joomla Themes

Joomla has a lot of options you can choose, including lots of Joomla themes and templates. You can use a completely different layout and theme for every page of your site if you so choose. While choice is great — don’t go overboard! Multiple themes can make your website look scattered and unorganized. If you want to use varying templates when present new ideas on your website, this is acceptable; but using different themes altogether does not have an appealing appearance.

* Your URL’s Need to Be Search Engine Accessible

One think about Joomla that makes it tricky to use is that the default URLs that Joomla uses are not search engine friendly. You will need a Joomla extension to make your Joomla URL rewritable. Then you can rewrite your URL so that it can easily be used in search engine optimization programs. Once this is done, you can submit your website to be used in articles and other methods of advertisements to optimize your search engine placement.

* You Need to Create a RSS Feed

Even if your website viewers aren’t asking for an RSS feed you will need to create one for your Joomla site. Most blogs and websites have these, so not having one can hurt your traffic flow.

* Use Top and Left Menus

Don’t squish all of your menu options into one spot. Since Joomla gives you a lot of space for your menu placement, use the top and the left menu placement. This way you can put general menu listings on the left and then more specialized listings on the top. If you have a lot of menu listings, you might want to use the drop down menu feature.

* Make Sure that the Favicon is Your Logo

If you do not replace the default favicon, your favicon will be the Joomla logo. Favicons are those tiny icons that are at the top to the left of the web address. Even though it is tiny, many people will see this favicon. Making sure your favicon is your logo will increase your brand recognition.
